Introduction

NO BARRIERS DOLOMITI 2005 will take place in Cortina d'Ampezzo, 14-18 July, and is meant as an expansion of the themes proposed in the 2004 edition: promoting tourism for the disabled persons and the varied opportunities to practise sports and outdoor activities in the mountain environment.

The significant novelty of the 2005 edition will be a conference focussing on the advancement and dissemination of technologies and techniques that allow the physically challenged to improve their daily lives and to enjoy the natural environment.

This symposium will host important researchers and technologists with the latest initiatives and developments in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Industry leaders in physical medicine and rehabilitation and manufacturers of adaptive equipment and new technological devices will present their latest and greatest products to help mobility and to overcome disability in its various forms.

Practical demonstrations of the adaptive equipment led by athletes with disabilities will be scheduled - rock climbing, running, recumbent-bike and various bike tours, etc.

Sports performances featuring world famous disabled athletes will take place. Among them a sledge-hockey paralympic tournament and rock climbing demonstrations on the artificial wall by Hugh Herr, Erik Weihenmayer and Mark Wellman.

NO BARRIERS DOLOMITI will open with a Symposium on the theme of "accessible tourism". Associations, local bodies, and operators specializing in the field will present their projects and share opinions and ideas on the future initiatives to improve the tourist offer in the mountain environment.

The final event of NO BARRIERS DOLOMITI 2005 will be an extraordinary and highly inspirational "extra event": Hugh Herr, Erik Weihenmayer, Andy Holzer and other athletes with disabilities will ascend a major Dolomite wall.
