Cortina is a well-known and large center in the Dolomites. It was the host of the 1956 Winter Olympics, and is the site for World Cup events every year.

The Dolomites is a center of alpine culture and mountaineering. Some of the great historic climbers in the Alps were born in the Dolomites, including Reinhold Messner, the first person to climb all of the world's 8,000 meter peaks, and Cortina's Lino Lacedelli, the first to climb the second highest peak, K-2, in 1954.

Cortina is convenient to the Milan, Munich and Venice airports, all within 2-5 hours. It has the hotel and visitor infrastructure to accommodate the NO BARRIERS DOLOMITI event.
